5 Ways To “Be Selfish”

In the realm of elite sports, the term "selfish" often carries a negative connotation. However, when approached positively, a certain degree of selfishness can be incredibly beneficial for an athlete's performance. This is one of my favorite topics to challenge my athletes with! Here are 5 ways being selfish can enhance your game:

  1. Prioritizing Self-Care: Elite athletes understand that their body is their most important asset. By prioritizing rest, nutrition, and recovery, they ensure they are always performing at their peak. This "selfish" focus on health enables longevity and consistency in performance.

  2. Setting Boundaries: Successful athletes know when to say no. Whether it's social events, late-night outings, or unnecessary distractions, setting boundaries allows them to maintain a laser focus on their goals. This disciplined approach helps them stay ahead of the competition.

  3. Seeking Personal Development: Investing time in mental and physical training tailored to their needs is crucial. Elite athletes often engage in personalized coaching and skill enhancement sessions, showing that putting oneself first in training can lead to significant performance improvements.

  4. Self-Motivation: Internal drive is a hallmark of elite athletes. They are often their own biggest motivators, pushing themselves to new heights. This form of self-reliance fosters resilience and a winning mentality that is essential for success at the highest levels.

  5. Embracing Individual Goals: While team success is important, focusing on personal milestones can lead to overall better performance. When athletes strive to break their own records, they contribute more effectively to their team's success.

By understanding and embracing the positive aspects of being selfish, athletes can unlock new levels of performance and personal growth. Encourage this mindset to see transformative results on and off the court.
